Okay, I know it's been a WHILE since we've chatted, but I'll spare you the lengthy intro because I know you have Christmas baking to do! We'll get right to it: today, I'm sharing a twist on my "famous" chocolate chip cookies: orange chocolate chip cookies!
Or, more specifically, chocolate chip cookies with Terry's Chocolate Orange bits and orange zest. So, if you need fantastic cookies for a cookie party or you just want some delicious holiday baking around, I've got you.
Terry's is a Christmas staple for me, but there's no reason you can't enjoy these cookies any time of year (including after Christmas, when you're looking for a way to use Terry's Chocolate)... so, let's get started.
Terry's Orange Chocolate Chip Cookies Ingredients
Here's what you'll need:
- Chocolate chips (semi-sweet or milk chocolate)
- All-purpose flour
- Baking soda
- Salt
- Vanilla extract
- Unsalted butter
- Egg
- Sugar
- Brown sugar
- Cinnamon
- Terry's Chocolate Orange (either the "orange" or the chocolate bar will work)
- Orange zest
Re: butter
I microwave the butter for about 20 seconds or until it looks something like this. You want it soft and warm, but not TOTALLY liquid.
Other Cookie Recipe Notes
This is kind of a "choose your own adventure" cookie recipe in the sense that there is more than one way to make them and have them turn out delicious.
- I prefer a mix of regular chocolate chips with the Terry's orange chocolate. HOWEVER, you could absolutely use Terry's for all of the chocolate if you want an even stronger orange flavor. If you don't want any orange flavor...then I'd stick with this cookie recipe instead.
- Another option is to add more cinnamon (or remove it altogether), depending on how cinnamon-y you want these cookies to be.
- Craisins also go great with the orange flavor, so feel free to add a handful of craisins to the dough as well.
- My traditional chocolate chip cookie recipe calls for shredded coconut, which I always love. You can definitely add a few tablespoons of that to these as well. Up to you!
- You don't need to flatten the cookie dough balls before baking; they'll flatten a bit as they bake.
- I would aim for underbaking these rather than overbaking them. Keep a close eye on them and pull them out when you notice any golden-brown on top.
- Make sure your butter is soft enough. Otherwise, it will be hard to mix the dough.

Orange Chocolate Chip Cookies with Terry's Chocolate Orange Bits and Orange Zest
Ingredients
Method
- Preheat oven to 350F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Melt butter in the microwave for about 20 seconds until it's soft and melty but not totally liquid.
- Use a microplaner to get 1 zest of one large orange (it should make about 1 packed tablespoon). Set aside. Chop the Terry's chocolate into pieces of your desired size. Set aside.
- In the bowl of your stand mixer (fitted with your flat beater) or using a hand mixer, beat the sugars and butter for 2-3 minutes, until very smooth.
- Add the egg, vanilla, and orange zest. Mix for another minute. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt. Mix. Slowly pour the dry mixture into the wet mixture, and continue to mix.
- Once combined, gently stir in the chocolate chips and chopped Terry's chocolate orange.
- Divide the dough into about 18 balls. Place them on the baking sheets with a few inches between each one.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until lightly golden on top and set. Don't overbake. Let them cool for a few minutes before digging in.Baking time will vary depending on the size of the cookies. It's better to err on the side of underbaking rather than overdoing it. You can put one baking sheet in the fridge while the other bakes. If the dough is very cold, you'll likely need to bake for another 2 minutes or so.
